By Raffy Paredes A remarkable photo of a single atom trapped by electric fields has just been awarded the top prize in a well-known science photography competition. The photo is titled “Single Atom in an Ion Trap” and was shot by David Nadlinger of the University of Oxford. The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in the UK announced the winning photos of its national science photography competition. Nadlinger’s grand prize photo shows an atom as a speck of light between two metal electrodes placed about 2mm (0.078in) apart. The photo was captured on August 7, 2017, using a Canon 5D Mark II DSLR, a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 lens, extension tubes, and two flash units with color gels (PetaPixel). Rogelio Bernal Andreo, an award-winning astrophotographer made the right calculations, aimed his telescope and camera into space and remarkably was able to take a photo of the Tesla Roadster launched into space with the SpaceX Falcon Heavy from a million miles away. In time for the massive human migration that is China’s annual Lunar New Year, Chinese police have added a new surveillance tool to their already considerable arsenal: glasses outfitted with fast facial recognition technology that’s connected to a database of 10,000 suspects wanted in connection with major crimes. The People’s Daily reported that the eyeglass-mounted camera is equipped with facial-recognition technology capable of “highly effective screening” of crowds for fugitives traveling under false pretenses. As of Wednesday, the glasses had already helped railway police at Zhengzhou’s East Railway Station nab seven suspects and 26 people who were allegedly traveling using other people’s identities (nakedsecurity.sophos.com). Graphic artist and photo hobbyist Denn Francis Ambagan of Binangonan, Rizal shares an untitled portrait of his wife whom he also says is his “number one and main model.” Denn writes that while he was introduced to photography as a fine arts student at FEU many years back, it was only three years ago that he took it up as a hobby. “But it was just last year that I focused more on this field,” he states.” “I can say I am a hobbyist and a portrait photographer. As of now I rarely shoot due to my work but I’m looking forward to make time for it. From college student Denzel Eileen  Evangelista is the photo, “Daranak Waterfalls, Tanay, Rizal.” Dr. Liborio Soledad Jr., a practicing surgeon from Las Piñas sent in an untitled photo of a boat at sunset taken in Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan last October 2017. His description reads: Deemed as one of the best sunsets in the world, this daily phenomenon never fails to emanate awe from every visitor to the island.  With its play of colors, showcasing yellow, orange, and red hues, one can’t help but stare for a moment and perhaps even capture it in photos.  And what better way to savor its splendor than to witness it straight from the open sea.  Locals offer sunset sailboat rides lasting for 30-60 minutes giving tourists an uninterrupted view of the setting sun. The untitled landscape photo of misty mountains comes from secondary public school teacher and “self-confessed travel photographer” Mark Wynn Combo of Cardona, Rizal. The photo features Mt. Ulap in Itogon, Benguet. Kevin Icabales, employed as a real estate photographer of Megaworld Corporation at the Uptown Bonifacio submitted the curious photo of a dog on a plastic sofa beside a dummy on a chair titled “Passenger Seat.” He shares: “I started enjoying photography after I graduated from college. My first experience is wedding photography, then I grabbed an opportunity in a corporate world. For my personal projects, I enjoy shooting street photography using my DSLR and smartphone.” From Edward Bryan Abad, co-founder of Mobile Photography Philippines is an untitled photo of a man jumping to the sea from a cliff full of people. The photo was taken in a small island in Morong, Bataan last year. “We have an online group for Mobile Photographer enthusiasts,” writes Edward. “We promote mobile photography to par with DSLR’s taking it to a whole new level.” Interested readers can get in touch with Mobile Photography Philippines at www.facebook.com/ groups/ mobilephotographyphilippines/. The black-and-white portrait titled “Street Child Superhero” won for Celbert Palaganas of Cebu the People’s Choice Award winner of the 10th Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk held last Oct 7, 2017. “Share ko lang to inspire people,” he writes. “It was an international competition with all the professional photographers around the world and I am blessed that my photo was chosen to be the winner carrying the Philippine banner by just using my Samsung Galaxy S8+ mobile phone.” Celbert who works as a hotel bartender says that he started having an interest in photography just last September. “Though at first I did not take it seriously until people from Facebook began to recognize my photos and they seemed to like it. I am a mobile photographer by nature.” Avelino Nacion Garais, a member of the Camera Club of Angono contributed the photo, “Basaan” taken during the celebration of the Feast of San Sebastian in Pasig City. From BPO supervisor and photo hobbyist, Don Don Sangel of Angono, is the untitled photo of a streetfood vendor’s stall.
