The chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the country's top cop, Director General Ronald dela Rosa, is a proud "under de saya" to his wife.
Dela Rosa shared his "secret to success" on Tuesday to the 19 newlywed couples, all are either uniformed or non-uniformed personnel, who participated in the PNP's “Kasalang Bayan 2018" held at the Saint Joseph Church in Camp Crame, Quezon City.

"Magpaka under de saya kayo, 'yung mga lalaki. Very successful ako sa aking pagiging under dahil it will not make you a lesser person if you show your love to your wife by being an under de saya (Try to be submissive to your , the men. very successful in being an under because it will not make you a lesser person if you show your love to your wife by being an under de saya)," said Dela Rosa, who served as the principal sponsor of the 19 couples. His wife, Nancy Grace sat beside him in the entire ceremony.
"Kayo naman mga wife, you don't have to be overdomineering over your husband dahil kapag naramdaman nila na sinasakal ng asawa, magrerebelde rin 'yan (As for the wives, you don't have to be overdomineering over your husband because if you are too strict, they will be rebellious)," he added.
The annual mass wedding was organized by the PNP's Chaplain Service headed by its director, Senior Supt. Rev. Fr. Jason Ortizo and Supt. Rev Fr. Ronie Arong, Catholic Base Chaplain.
The event, where PNP personnel were given free wedding complete with reception, was held as part of the activities in celebration of the 27th PNP founding anniversary.
Balanced life
"We all know that a police officer's life is not a bed of roses. Dahil tayo ay mga lingkod-bayan hindi sa atin ang ating oras at marami taying pinagdadaanang hirap at panganib sa pagpapatupad ng ating tungkulin (We all know that a police officer's life is not a bed of roses. Since we are public servants, our time is not ours and we face a lot of challenges and risks in fulfilling our duties)," Dela Rosa said.
However, to be a successful couple and public servant, Dela Rosa said one should know how to balance his/her personal and professional life.
"Just as you serve and protect the community, you must also serve and protect your family. You must know how to balance your work and family without sacrificing any of the two and that is the challenge you must now face," he said.
'Flawed but forgiven'
The PNP chief also advised the newly-weds to "live within their means," avoid being "too ambitious" on earthly riches, and settle any misunderstanding before going to sleep.
Dela Rosa must have been speaking from his personal experiences, as he admitted he was not a perfect husband to Nancy Grace.
"I cannot claim na I'm a perfect father, I'm a perfect husband. There were times na nahuli ako ni misis may nagtetext sa akin sa gabi (my wife caught me recieving a text message at night)," he shared.
The text, which apparently came from a woman, was full of kisses, Dela Rosa said. However, Dela Rosa denied knowing the unidentified sender and said he immediately asked for forgiveness from his wife.
He said it must have been sent by police officers who want to destroy his image, which drew laughter from the crowd.
Dela Rosa concluded that police officers who are happily married tend to be more effective public servants.
