'Basyang' death toll in Caraga rises to 15

As flood subsides in several areas in Caraga region and several of the typhoon victims went back home, the regional monitoring and action center of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD-13) recorded on Saturday an increase in the number of dead to 15.

Most of the victims drowned due to flash floods and overflowed rivers and creeks while other victims were also hit by landslides, it said.
Due to tropical depression ‘Basyang’ (international name: Sanba), the DSWD-13 Update Situational Report No. 14 stated that search and retrieval operation for a missing person in Alegria town, Surigao del Norte province, was still ongoing.
As of press time, the DSWD-13 recorded a total of 32 casualties, 16 persons were injured and one was missing.
The latest report of the agency showed that 14, 104 families or 59, 898 persons from 4 provinces with 34 municipalities, a city and 170 barangays in Caraga region, were affected by ‘Basyang’.
“However, 435 families or 2,059 persons were still staying inside evacuation centers and 1,830 families or 8,168 persons were staying with their relatives’ as of reporting time,” DSWD 13 Regional Director Mita Chuchi G. Lim told The Manila Bulletin on Saturday.
“We are still responding to the requests of the different local government units for deployment of more family food packs (FFPs) for their calamity victims,” the region’s DSWD chief said.
The agency is also assessing the damaged houses of the victims, she said.
An updated situational report of the agency showed that 223 houses were reported as totally damaged while 882 houses were reported as partially damaged in various parts of the region.
Meanwhile, regional officials, field engineers and technical men of the different line agencies of the government, particularly the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and Department of Agriculture (DA) are now assessing and validating on the ground the damage on infrastructure and agriculture brought about by typhoon ‘Basyang’ in the region.
Some of the municipalities in the region devastated by the typhoon were declared under a state of calamity, with the latest one being the municipality of Alegria in Surigao del Norte province.
Some of the barangays in Alegria town were hit by flash floods and landslides, 54 houses were washed away while 514 were partially damaged due to rampaging flood waters, it was further gathered.
