109 OFWs with contract problems repatriated

By Analou de Vera One hundred nine distressed overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from Damman, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Saturday morning on board a Philippine Airlines flight in line with a promise to bring them home before Christmas. (MANILA BULLETIN) (MANILA BULLETIN) "The workers were repatriated in line with the promise of Labor Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III to bring home as many distressed OFWs from financially strapped Saudi companies before Christmas," the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) said. The OWWA's repatriation team rendered transportation assistance, including temporary shelter at the agency's halfway home. The OWWA said that many of the OFWs decided to go back to the Philippines due to "contract violations by their employers such as unpaid salaries, end of service benefits, lack of vacation leaves and failure to secure a final exit visa." The OFWs received financial cash assistance while awaiting their flight home. Another cash assistance and livelihood package was given to the workers after they arrived at their respective hometowns, the OWWA said.
