Filipino celebrities-turned-YouTubers worth watching

In the days of YouTube discovery, everyone wonders, “How does this social media platform make money?” Well, an 8-year-old boy knows the answer. Meet Ryan. Ryan of Ryan ToysReview may just be a school kid, but make no mistake about it: He's collecting millions of dollars measured in number of views and subscribers. In a Forbes report, Ryan generated $22 million in the 12 months leading to June 1, 2018, making him the highest-paid YouTube star to date. Ryan ToysReview also took the No. 1 spot this year on the American business magazine’s annual list of the highest-earning YouTube accounts, up from No. 8 last year. His videos have racked up more than 25 billion views and counting. His contents are mostly about reacting to all sorts of Toys – from Legos to Play-Dohs to Disney Car toys to jumping castles – but often accompanied by his parents and twin sisters. Ryan’s online career has also led to his own line of merchandise being sold in Walmart, including figurines, stuffed animals, and tubs of slime. “I’m entertaining and I’m funny,” Ryan said in a recent interview with NBC as published on Forbes.com, explaining the popularity has led him to become a “millionaire.” Here in the Philippines, a number of Filipinos are also making a name for themselves in the world of YouTube. Even celebrities have already crossed over, giving fans a glimpse of their personal (and not-so-personal) lives through videos uploaded on the platform. Take Alex Gonzaga as an example. ALEX GONZAGA in 'Chambe' ALEX GONZAGA in 'Chambe' More than a year since she created her YouTube channel (Ms Alex Gonzaga), the funny actress already has 2.2 million subscribers. Netizens have commended her videos for featuring her family – mother Pinty, father Bonoy, sister Toni Gonzaga, nephew Seve, and boyfriend Mikee Morada. She also makes videos of her trips abroad, makeup tutorials and dance covers. The music video of her own single “Chambe” (inspired by her nephew Seve) has reached more than four million views in the span of two weeks. Alex received a Gold Play Button from YouTube August this year for reaching the millionth mark in number of subscribers.
