Authorities validating if police officer gunned
down was drug personality in drug watchlist
Authorities are validating if the police officer who was gunned down by unidentified armed men in Pasig City last week was also the alleged drug personality included in the illegal drug watchlist of Pasig City Police, a police official said yesterday.
Senior Supt. Rizalito Gapas, Pasig City Police chief, said in a phone interview they are validating if PO2 Manuel “Boboy” Melendrez III--the slain member of the Philippine National Police Crime Investigation and Detection Unit (PNP-CIDG)--was included in the illegal drug watchlist.
“Merong ‘Boboy Melendrez’ na nakasulat sa watchlist...two years ago (There is a certain ‘Boboy Melendrez’ who was listed in the watchlist...two years ago),” Gapas said.
“Pero bina-validate pa natin kung the same ang ‘Boboy Melendrez’ at ang biktama (But we are still validating if this ‘Boboy Melendrez’ and the victim are the same),” he added.
Investigation showed that Melendrez was gunned down by unidentified armed men at around 11:45 p.m. on Thursday in front of his house in Barangay Caniogan, Pasig City.
His wife, who was also with him, heard successive gunshots and quickly checked on her husband where she saw Melendrez covered in blood, police said.
Melendrez was rushed to the Tri City Medical Center but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
The Pasig City Police, Gapas said, have already created a special investigation task group to look into the case of PO2 Melendrez III.
Meanwhile, Gapas said in a text message on Saturday they are looking at “all possible angles” including recent and previous enemies, involvement with illegal activities and family feuds to identify the motive of the killing.
He added that it’s “too early to name suspects” since they still “need concrete evidences.” (Jhon Aldrin Casinas)
