DepEd to administer NCAE

The Department of Education (DepEd) will administer the National Career Assessment Examination (NCAE) for School Year (SY) 2018-2019 to all Grade 9 students in both public and private secondary schools this December.

In a memorandum, Education Secretary Leonor Briones said that DepEd, through the Bureau of Education Assessment (BEA) and with the assistance of school division and secondary schools and personnel, shall administer the Grade 9 NCAE for all secondary schools nationwide on December 12 to 13. This is also pursuant to the DepEd Order (DO).
“In the event that some school divisions will receive the testing materials beyond December 11, 2018, they can administer the test in their most convenient time as determined by the schools division superintendent (SDS),” Briones said.
Briones also reminded that the “authorized forwarder shall deliver and retrieve the test materials at least a week before and a day after the test administration, respectively, except for the National Capital Region (NCR) schools divisions, which shall be delivered two days before the test administration.”
The NCAE is administered among students to be able to assess the students’ aptitudes and skills and to estimate what field or discipline they can excel in. While test-taking is mandatory, DepEd said the results of the NCAE are recommendatory.
Basically, NCAE is an “aptitude test geared toward providing information through test results for self-assessment, career awareness, and career guidance of junior high school students of the K to 12 Basic Education Program (BEP).”
For K to 12 Program, the NCAE aims to determine the learner’s aptitude and occupational interest on any of the Senior High School (SHS) tracks. Occupational interest is the learner’s preference in specific vocations and career categories. As per DepEd, the exam also aims to guide the conduct of career guidance at the school level and to ensure the development of skills and competencies required for the world of work and career choices.
DepEd reminded that only public schools and private schools with permits to operate or government recognition can administer the NCAE. DepEd also said that the NCAE is “non-discriminatory for people who have aptitude for technical-vocational and entrepreneurial courses and is also open to other interested out-of-school youth and A & E passers.”
