OFWs warned vs cosmetics containing hazardous substances

By Analou De Vera A cause-oriented group has advised Filipinos living or working abroad not to engage in the illegal trade of cosmetics that contains hazardous substances. "Filipinos abroad must not engage in the illicit trade of cosmetics and other regulated products that are not compliant with national and regional safety regulations," said Thony Dizon, Chemical Safety Campaigner of EcoWaste Coalition. "In Europe, for example, traders of skin whitening creams containing hydroquinone or mercury are determinedly prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” he added. The group said that skin lightening cosmetic products that contain hydroquinone can damage the liver and the nervous system. Meanwhile, products containing mercury can damage the kidney and may cause skin discoloration, rashes, and scarring. The group reminded that by engaging in this kind of activity, they are putting the well-being of their customers at risk. The group also advised the consumers that if they have products that contain the said substances, they should stop using it immediately as it can seriously harm their health.
