Feast of San Carlos Borromeo

By Christina Hermoso The Roman Catholic Church honors on Sunday the life and works of San Carlos (Saint Charles) Borromeo, the revered patron saint of seminarians as well as of several schools, towns, seminaries, and parishes in the country. A grand procession through the city’s main streets follows in the afternoon. A trade fair, carnival, agricultural fair, sports fests, contests, cultural shows, and other festive events are also held during the three-day celebration that began yesterday, November 3, and ends tomorrow, Nov. 5, with the observance of Negros Day. The highlight of the festivities is the holding of the much awaited 26th Pintaflores Festival, which features street dancing by participants dressed in colorful, ethnic-inspired costumes, their bodies painted with flowers, reminiscent of the tattooed Visayans of the pre-Spanish Negros. Commemorative rites in honor of San Carlos will also be observed in Mahatao, Batanes. San Carlos was born on Oct. 2, 1538 in Arona, Italy. Ordained priest in 1563, he was appointed archbishop and cardinal of Milan, Italy, on the same year. Known as a great reformer, confessor, and charity worker, he established seminaries and colleges for the education of candidates for the priesthood. San Carlos died in 1584 and was canonized by Pope Paul V on Nov. 1, 1610. (Christina I. Hermoso)
