Dominic Sytin, the 51-year-old CEO of United Auctioneers Inc., was with his bodyguard Efren Espartero when the incident happened.
Police said Sytin and Espartero were attacked while at the sidewalk along Waterfront Road. Sytin was about to enter The Lighthouse Hotel when an unidentified suspect shot him at the back and the left side of his head. Espartero tried to retaliate but was shot several times at the right side of his body and arm.
Police said the gunman as 5 ft., 8 inches to 5 ft., 9 inches tall, of medium build, wearing a blue polo over a black t-shirt, gray pants and red veil. The suspect fled the scene using a black Mio scooter.
Sytin was declared dead on the-spot while his bodyguard was rushed to the nearest hospital in critical condition.
SBMA Chairman Wilma Eisma ordered a lockdown of the Subic Freeport, tightening the security of all entrances and exits to the Freeport.
“The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority condemns in the strongest possible term what is apparently a targeted assassination of a business locator in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone,” Eisma said on her official statement.
She added, “This is sad news for us, not only because a prominent businessman who has been a very active member of the Subic Freeport community has fallen prey to violence, but also because one life has been snuffed out just like that.”
At the moment, the SBMA is working with the Philippine National Police and other investigating units to flush out the killers.
Eisma also directed the SBMA special weapons and tactics (SWAT) team to double the security at the gates and to thoroughly examine individuals and vehicles prior to their exit.
“In this light, we ask for the cooperation of the public as we impose strict security measures in the Subic Bay Freeport, and urge any person with information to help authorities solve this crime.”
