SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – Thousands of Catholic devotees joined the procession welcoming the pilgrimage of the Black Nazarene, or the “Poong Itim na Nazareno,” from Quiapo Church, Manila to this city on Monday.

The procession started at the national highway, from the “Monument of Unknown Soldiers” in San Fernando City, La Union to Saint William the Hermit Cathedral.
Avelino Yalung, president of the Extra-Ordinary Eucharistic Lay Minister of the Saint William the Hermit Cathedral, said the image of the miraculous Black Nazarene will stay in the cathedral of the Diocese of San Feranando De La Union from November 26 to December 2.
After the procession, Yalung said that a concelebrated mass was officiated by Fr. Roberto Benito Collado, parish priest of the Saint William the Hermit Parish.
Fr. Douglas Badong, Parochial Vicar of Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene-Quiapo, said in his homily during the mass that the image of the Black Nazarene was an image of hope, strength and endurance for the people.
“If you look at the image of Jesus Christ as the Black Nazarene, it shows an image of suffering; however, many people are attracted to the image because it shows an image of hope. The people believe that the image has a lot of miracles as it prove by many catholic devotees, who relief from their miseries upon seeking the help from God through prayers and devotion,” said Badong.
Badong added, “the image of “Black Nazarene manifests an inspiration for continuous faith in God as a saviour from all the suffering of his people in this world.”
Catholic devotee Bernardo Carpio claimed that he has received a lot of blessings since he started his devotion to the “Black Nazarene.”
“The image of “Black Nazarene” is really a miraculous one because a lot of my personal problems were gradually solved after I asked his guidance in my devotion to him,” Carpio said.
