2 retired Cebu cops shot dead

By Lesley Vestil and Calvin Cordova TALISAY CITY, CEBU - Two retired police officers were shot dead by still unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen outaside a mall in Barangay Tabunok, Talisay City Sunday night. Marlu Conag of the Talisay police said that the two retired officers were having coffee at the South Town Center Mall in Barangay Tabunok yesterday afternoon when they decided to leave the establishment onboard a blue motorcycle at around 6 p.m. As they were about to enter the national highway, two men onboard another motorcycle shot them and sped off. The two retired police officers sustained gunshot wounds to the body. They died on the spot. Conag said that based on an initial background check, both officers were once assigned to the Provincial Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Group (PAIDSOTG). Causon was also previously assigned at a police station in Cebu City a year before he retired from the service. In Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City, jail guard Jessie Castañares, 33, was likewise shot dead by motorcycle-riding gunmen before dawn. Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center Warden Reynaldo Valmoria said he was surprised to learn that Castañares was killed in Guadalupe when the jail guard was supposed to escort inmates confined at Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMCC). The jail guard suffered at least 14 gunshot wounds to the body. According to Valmoria, Castañares was slapped with a two-month suspension early this year due to some irregularities.
