PORT MORESBY - After drawing flak for taking a power nap and missing key meetings at the ASEAN summit in Singapore, President Duterte is expected to have a “fruitful and productive” stint in Papua New Guinea for the 19th Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit.

(OPS / MANILA BULLETIN) The President, who arrived in Port Moresby Friday morning, is expected to push for empowerment of small enterpreneurs and inclusive growth amid the digital economy, among others, during the summit on November 17 and 18. Duterte is the first Philippine president to visit Papua New Guinea. "The Palace expects President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to have a fruitful and productive visit to Papua New Guinea, the host of this year’s 19th Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, as he joins 20 other leaders and representatives of member economies for the Economic Leaders’ Meeting,” Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said. "The APEC Forum is likewise a good opportunity for the President to express his support for mechanisms that will enable our micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to take advantage of digital and online platforms to benefit their enterprises and to bring their products and services overseas,” he said. Among the world leaders attending the APEC Summit are Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, and Indonesia President Joko Widodo. The APEC summit, a regional economic forum established in 1989, carries this year’s theme "Harnessing Inclusive Opportunities, Embracing the Digital Future.” The leaders are expected to tackle the regional trade concerns including connectivity, digital economy, sustainable growth, during the two-day summit talks. Panelo said the President is also expected to join other APEC leaders in a dialogue with the APEC Business Advisory Council or ABAC as well as a meeting with the leaders of the Pacific Islands Forum. The President, meantime, has no final bilateral meeting yet with any APEC economic leader during his visit to Port Moresby. "As to possible bilateral meetings with our leaders and heads of economies, officials of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) are still working, coordinating and finalizing with their counterparts on the best schedule and arrangements,” Panelo said.
