President Duterte said he is still experiencing pain near his ear from a severe spinal injury due to a motorcycle accident he had when he was 68 years old.

In a speech in Puerto Princesa Palawan Saturday evening, Duterte explained that he is seen massaging his ear because of the pain that he is experiencing there almost 24/7.
"I’m suffering from pain 24 hours a day. And probably you see me always massaging the left nerve of my lower ear. It’s because I’m suffering almost every day nonstop," he said.
"In a scale of --- pain scale of one to 10, maybe something like two, three," he added.
According to Duterte, his family did not want him to undergo surgery as it may have a negative effect on him later.
"Kaya na-issue ‘yan. Kasi nung una hindi ko talaga kaya. Hindi ko --- ‘yung iba nagpapa-ano. Ang problema ayaw ng pamilya ko magpa-opera. Basta ‘yung spinal (It became an issue before because I really couldn't take it. The problem is, my family didn't want me to undergo operation as long as it is spinal)," he said.
"Kasi ‘yung OFW na asawa ko na nurse, ‘yung pangalawa, Eh ayaw niya eh, ‘yung --- she’s an OFW, a nurse. Sabi niya na huwag, huwag na huwag (Because my wife who was a nurse overseas, the second one, she was against it). Maybe she has seen so many operations gone awry," he added, referring to common-law wife Honeylet Avanceña.
The President then said that Avanceña instead suggested that he take Fentanyl to relieve the pain he is experiencing.
"Sabi niya, kung kaya mo subukan mo yung Fentanyl. Pain killer ‘yan. Pero sabi ng doktor, ang isang ganun, one piece i-cut ko nang apat. One at a time, two days. Parang adhesive. (She said if I can. I should try Fentanyl. It's a painkiller and the doctor said I should cut a piece into four and take them one at a time for two days like an adhesive)," he said.
Duterte then said the doctor told him to stop taking Fentanyl when he said that he was already taking too much.
"Sabi niya, 'Kailangan either you stop it, hindi na rin ‘yan ang remedyo kung gusto mo operahan (The doctor said I should stop it because it is not even the remedy anymore. If I want, I have to undergo surgery)," he said.
"Pero ‘yun, ‘pag nagkamali ka diyan sa --- so many thousands of nerves there, mag-isang mali kang --- wala na. Marami ako nakita. Pari, naoperahan. Pag-opera, hindi na makatindig (But the thing is, there are thousands of nerves there, one mistake and it's over. I've seen so many people, including priests, who underwent surgery and ended up not being able to stand anymore)," he added.
Duterte earlier said Fentanyl made him feel like he was in cloud nine. He has been criticized for casually talking about the use of the drug which some experts have described to be potentially addictive.
"There was a time na 'yung buo nilagay ko (I swallowed the whole thing) because more than just the disappearance of pain, you feel that you are on cloud nine," he had said.
"Para bang (It's like) everything is okay with the world, nothing to worry about," he added.
