The photo of a bridge over the MRT railway went viral and has drawn criticisms from social media users saying the bridge’s height was too high and might cause inconvenience to the elderly, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities.
MMDA general manager Jojo Garcia, in an interview with DZMM, said they built the footbridge after several instances of pedestrians being run over vehicles as they crossed the highway.
The MMDA noted that they cannot deescalate the height of the bridge as it needs to be 3 to 4 meters above the power lines of the MRT-3 for safety reasons.
"Inilagay muna natin ito temporary para at least maiwasan lang po natin iyung patintero sa kalsada," said Garcia.
Meanwhile, Garcia added that they are currently inquiring if funds could be allocated to provide an escalator for the bridge.
