Boy scouts stand guard to remember 24 Filipino boy scouts in 11th Boy Scout World Jamboree

By Erma Edera  Amid the scorching heat at the Manila North Cemetery during All Souls’ Day, young boy scouts took turns in serving as honor guards at the Scout Wall of Remembrance to honor their predecessors as well as the 24 Scouts who perished in a horrific plane crash while on their way to the 11th Jamboree in Greece in 1963. (MANILA BULLETIN) (MANILA BULLETIN) One of them, Christian Relucio, 11, of Ramon Magsaysay Elementary School, said it was his first time to serve as honor guard and he was happy to experience it. “Sobrang saya po. Ginagawa po namin ito para mapahalagahan namin ‘yung mga nagawa po nung 24 scouts. At the same time, nakakatuwa po kasi may mga bago po akong nakikilalang boyscout sa ibang council,” he told an interview with the Manila Bulletin. Renz Yumol, 17, senior crew leader of T. Paez High School in Tondo, Manila, also said, “Masarap po sa pakiramdam na maging kabahagi po nito. Kahit po tumanda na ako, gagawin ko pa rin po ito dahil nasa dugo na po namin ang pagiging boyscout.” Around 50 boy scouts from different councils in Quezon City, Marikina and Manila voluntarily served to be the honor guards at the Manila North Cemetery. Fe Castor Pangan, sister of the deceased scout Roberto Castor, who was then a 14-year-old Boy Scout, manages the group’s scouting activities, together with National Capital Region Commissioner for Community-Based Scouting Florencio Antonio. Pangan said their group has raised professional scouts from all walks of life such as doctors, police and even priests. “We want to continue the legacy of the 24 scouts. Scouting is a key in raising disciplined Filipino youths,” she said. Florencio Antonio, 73, who was supposed to be the 25th scout to join the 11th Jamboree, said that he felt that it was his mission to continue the legacy of his fellow boy scouts. For almost 65 years, he devoted his time in scouting as he is now the Quezon City national capital regional commissioner of community-based scouting. “Ayaw kasi ako payagan ng mother ko noon, siguro mother’s intuition. That’s why I’m here, kasi hindi ako naka-attend before, mission ko na ituloy ‘yung mga nasimulan nila,” Antonio said.
