IMUS CITY, Cavite — Officials of this highly-urbanized city are embarking on organic urban farming as a long-term program in a bid to make the city the “Organic Food Capital of Cavite.”
Mayor Emmanuel Leonard Maliksi led Friday the launching of the Organic Urban Farming project to start the implementation of the three-phase program particularly for the city’s idle lands.

Organic Urban Farming is a method or practice that involves growing and nurturing crops without the use of pesticides and, synthetic based fertilizers, among others, in a village city or town. The CBF Farm is one of those areas that have introduced organic farming in the city. “There is nothing impossible with organic farming in the areas as long as there is will in everyone,” said Maliksi. “Unknown to them, there are many lands, particularly those in the inner part of the barangays, that can be used for farming,” he said. The local administration and the City Agricultural Services Office encouraged everyone to observe and practice organic farming, citing its benefits in terms of foods and health. For some residents, farming is virtually dead in this historical city as the area is teeming with subdivisions and industrial and commercial establishments. All that farming in the city needs is the will to keep it going and the support of everyone. With the launching of the Organic Urban Farming and to keep it progressive, the city will introduce Demo Farms or the setting up of areas where organic farming can be introduced and taught to farmers, teachers, students, homeowner officers, and members or any other individuals. City Information Officer Jay Saquilayan said they will implement organic farming in public idle lands, with an area of 400 square meters and up, that can be worked on and benefited upon by the out-of-school youths, 4Ps (or those in Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program) or drug dependents. The city will also set up the Food Processing Unit and Post Harvest Facility, in coordination with the Department of Trade (DTI) and the Department of Science and (DOST) for the handling and selling of the organic vegetables, and fruits, he said.
