President Duterte is eyeing Davao City 1st district Rep. Karlo Nograles as the next possible Cabinet Secretary.
Davao City Rep. Karlo Nograles
(FEDERICO CRUZ / MANILA BULLETIN) “He is one of those being considered," Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said during a Palace press briefing when asked about the imminent appointment of Nograles to the Cabinet. "The announcement will be made by the President himself as to the other members of the Cabinet who will replace those who filed their certificates of candidacy,” Panelo added. Panelo noted that the new Cabinet appointments would likely be announced after the long All Saints’ and All Souls’ holiday weekend. If Nograles is chosen by the President, he will take the government post vacated by Leoncio Evasco Jr. who decided to run for governor of Bohol province in the 2019 elections. Nograles, a known political ally of the President, earlier announced he was no longer pursuing a senatorial post in next year's elections after "much introspection" and consolation with his family. He said he could better serve the Duterte administration by supporting the candidacies of fellow Mindanaoans. Nograles, chair of the House committee on appropriations, is on his third and final term as congressman. A number of Cabinet members earlier filed certificates of candidacies for national and local posts in the forthcoming elections. Among the poll aspirants are Evasco, former Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque, and Special Assistant to the President Christopher Go.
