The Philippine Navy (PN) contingent to the first-ever ASEAN-China Maritime Exercise (ACMEX) joined preliminary stage activities in Zhanjiang, Guandong, China, on Monday.

The Naval Task Group (NTG) 88, as the Navy contingent is officially designated, took part in the Diving Operations and Seminar Exchange conducted at the People’s Liberation Army-Navy (PLA-N) Diving Operations Center for the Naval Special Operations Group (NAVSOG) team.
The Navy’s medical team also attended the medical seminar exchange at the PLA No. 422 Hospital, where PLA military physicians showcased natural healing methods complementing modern medical procedures.
A briefing for the Sea Sub-Phase activities such as radio checks, flight deck familiarization, pre-sail brief and safety regulations briefing were conducted to ensure cohesiveness and seamless communication among the members of multilateral task force.
Commander Jonathan V. Zata, director of the Naval Public Affairs Office, said the Navys participation in ACMEX significantly improved their skills while establishing mutual and effective relationship among ASEAN co-member states and China.
ACMEX 2018 is hosted by the Royal Singapore Navy and the China’s People Liberation Army, Navy.
Zata said the exercises aim to promote military exchanges and cooperation between ASEAN navies and the PLA focusing on maritime safety and search and rescue at sea with emphasis on the use of Code of Unplanned Encounter at Sea (CUES).
Earlier, Department of National Defense-Public Affairs Service chief Director Arsenio Andolong, said the holding of the joint ASEAN and Chinese exercise came about following the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting Retreat in Singapore last February.
“The proposal for a joint ASEAN and Chinese exercise was submitted in February of this year during the ADMM Singapore or at the ASEAN Defense Ministers. it was proposed to the body which the body approved so hence it was scheduled, at the moment,” Andolong said.
