Just two weeks after she was crowned Reina Hispanoamericana Filipinas 2018 on October 7, Alyssa Muhlach Alvarez left for Bolivia to compete in the international edition of one of the popular beauty pageants in South America.
Alvarez, daughter of actress Almira Muhlach and former Philippine Basketball Association player Paul Alvarrez, is the second Filipina to compete in the 27-year-old pageant dominated by Latinas. The finals of the Reina Hispanoamericana pageant will be held on Nov. 3.

The reigning Reina Hispanoamericana is Filipino actress Teresita Ssen "Winwyn" Marquez, daughter of veteran stars Alma Moreno and Joey Marquez.
Alvarez, niece of actor Aga Muhlach, admits there is pressure to duplicate the victory of Marquez because there was only little time to prepare as she leaves for the contest on Tuesday, Oct. 23.
Asked about the meaningful advice Marquez ever gave her, Alvarez says: "I've talked to Win wyn win multiple times na po. In Reina Hispanoamericana, it's super competitive and puro tarayan daw po. But she told me to be myself and be nice to all the people. "
It would be recalled that Marquez was alienated on several occasions because she doesn't speak Spanish fluently. But Alvarez says she's working on her Spanish language.
"I was told some of the girls would talk naman in English although majority speak in Spanish. I'm really exerting efforts to speak in Spanish and I'm really trying my best," says Alvarez.
For the talent show, Alvarez will perform a medley of Spanish songs. "It's not a competition but it's just a showcase of our talents. So for that part, I prepared a medley of Spanish songs."
In promoting hispanic culture, Alvarez believes that the Filipinos have already imbibed the Spanish culture through religion and other positive values.
"We wouldn't have religion if not for the Spaniards. And being close to our family is one value that we inherit from the Spaniards. So it's the promotion and appreciation of Spanish culture and something that we learn from them that we have to promote," she explains.
Alvarez says that she is grateful for the blessing of winning the pageant the first time she joined. She tells the reasons why she decided to focus on pageants than showbiz.
"Before, I am already a singer. After I finished my studies, many people were encouraging me to join pageants because ang dami ko raw opinions sa ibang issues;
"I really like to inspire other people and also support causes. Miss World Philippines is always like that," she says.
Now that she is going abroad to compete, Alvarez says that she needs to sacrifice two things - food and family.
"Alam nyo po ang hilig ko talagang kumain. Yung iba nakapag celebrate na. Ako the next day, after Miss World Philippines pageant, I ask myself 'Kakain ba ako? Inisip ko talaga siya. And of course, I am so close to my family. Those are the things that I need to sacrifice for now," Alvarez adds.
Also present to wish Alvarez good luck on her journey to Bolivia were newly crowned Miss World Philippines Katarina Rodriguez, Miss World Philippines (MWP) national director Arnold Vegafria; and MWP general manager Bessie Besana.
