The 80-year-old Maliksi, a three-term Cavite governor, confirmed his candidacy in the gubernatorial race in the 2019 midterm elections.
The 50-year-old Remulla is vying for the governorship in tandem with 30-year-old incumbent Vice Gov. Ramon Jolo Revilla III.
Remulla (Nacionalista Party) and Revilla (Nationalist People’s Coalition) filed their certificates of candidacies (CoCs) on Monday morning at the Provincial Commission on Elections (Comelec) here.
Maliksi is set to file his COC at 8 a.m. today (Wednesday), his camp said.
Maliksi, a Liberal Party stalwart in Cavite, confirmed his intention for the governorship in a rally attended by the multi-sector groups at his farm in Barangay Bucandala, Imus City.
Maliksi cited that his supporters have clamored for him to run due to pressing province’s concerns such as drug addiction and heinous crimes, traffic congestion and the garbage problem, health and insufficient livelihood and job opportunities, among others.
“He (Maliksi) is qualified. It is okay, it is his right to run, it is up to all those who seek public office that they have the best interest of the province and the people at heart,” Remulla told this reporter.
Maliksi was the opponent of Remulla in past elections.
Remulla won by landslide over Maliksi during the 2013 elections.
Incumbent Gov. Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla had filed on Friday his CoC to vie for Cavite's new 7th District representative seat.
The 57-year-old governor is the elder brother of Jonvic, a two-term Cavite governor, starting in 2010.
Boying ran for governor in 2016 and won after the younger Remulla withdrew his candidacy for him months before the elections.
The Remulla brothers are sons of the late Juanito “Johnny” Remulla who reigned as Cavite governor for 14 years. Remulla Sr. was the so-called “Father of Modern Cavite.”
