After declining his automatic nomination for the top judicial post, Supreme Court (SC) Senior Associate Justice Mariano del Castillo will join the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) in the selection of candidates seeking the vacant chief justice seat.

"As a matter of practice, the most senior SC justice who did not apply for the chief justice post will preside over the deliberations on the chief justice position,” explained Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra.
“Hence, Justice Del Castillo will preside over the JBC when the chief justice post will be taken up," pointed out the secretary who is an ex officio member of the JBC.
By tradition, senior magistrates of the SC are automatically nominated for the post of chief justice but will have to accept their automatic nomination before being included as a candidate.
Of the five senior SC magistrates, only del Castillo declined his automatic nomination.
The senior magistrates who accepted their automatic nomination are Senior Associate Justices Antonio Carpio, Diosdado Peralta, Lucas Bersamin, and Estela Perlas-Bernabe.
The JBC opened the application for the position of chief justice on October 1 due to the Oct. 10 retirement of Chief Justice Teresita Leonardo-De Castro.
The JBC already announced that it has extended its Oct. 15 deadline for the submission of applications for the post up to Oct. 26.
