The truth is, for the longest time, Aga Muhlach avoided doing romantic films thinking he had already done one too many in his career.

“I wanted to do different kinds of films. I want variety – and then this came along,” he said at the press conference for “First Love” where he plays the love interest of Bea Alonzo.
Aga continued: “It was a big challenge for me. While we were filming, while we’re in the process of doing this film, I had this fear which was like ‘I hope it works.’
“Until we started filming and that’s when I knew this is it. This is the movie I can’t wait for everyone to see.
“I’m 49 year old I’ve been in the industry for 35 years and you give me this chance to perform, to do a love story at this point in time with her generation is really… there’s so much gratitude.”
Aga pointed out that he’s been making just one, two movies yearly.
He talked about his fear at one point of not being able to pull off a comeback in showbiz.
“There was a time when I stopped working, I thought I wouldn’t be able to stage a comeback in showbiz. There was no challenge anymore. Every year I get offers but it’s not working. I was sad because I love making films but I felt it’s always the same.
“Until ‘Seven Sundays’ was offered to me. I thought the story about brothers which I haven’t done was great. And then this love story came.”
Not easy
Aga related that the filming of “First Love” was no walk in the park.
“My gosh, it almost did not happen. There were times we were rewriting, rewriting and rewriting and there was like ‘My God, it’s not happening.’
“But we never stopped. We believed in each other. I believe in the cast. I believe in Bea. I believe in Paul (Soriano). I said, ‘This is gonna happen.’”
First with Bea
Working for the first time with Bea had the actor discovering the actress up close and personal.

“Bea? I can say that we both have quirks but we’re pretty normal. Whatever happens to our lives, we still have both our feet planted firmly on the ground. We know our job so well. We know about popularity, richness and hard times so we stay firm.
“Bea’s concern is always genuine. She doesn’t have that showbiz persona. She’s not a celebrity, she’s not into acting, her acts are genuine and pure. But when she’s in front of the camera, you will learn lessons from the story or the character she plays because she’s a good actress,” he said.
There was awkward moment between them at first but they got over it.
Is it easy to fall in love with Bea?
“Yes,” came Aga’s instant reply.
“If I were single and she’s single, who wouldn’t fall for her? Even at my age now, even at her age now, if I don’t have a wife and she doesn’t have a boyfriend, we can be a couple.”
