“We welcome the swift approval of our office’s 2019 budget at the House of Representatives today. However, we still remain hopeful that our request to reinstate some P100 million,” she said.
The amount was slashed in the original proposed budget of the Office of the Vice President because of the cash-based budgeting system that the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) wants to implement next year.
Robredo appeared before the House of Representatives at 1:30 p.m. Monday to attend the plenary deliberation for the OVP’s P455.85-milion budget for 2019.
The lower OVP budget was swiftly approved at the plenary, with House Minority Leader Danilo Suarez asking the majority to look into returning its budget to the same level that was approved last year.
The 2018 budget allocation for Robredo’s office is P543.95 million, which is just six million lower than its original budget for next year.
The country’s second highest official said she hoped the P100 million would still be included in the final General Appropriations Act.
“This amount will be of great help to the local government units and the communities that we are helping, under our Angat Buhay program,” she stressed.
“There is still much work left to be done in our goal to lift our fellow Filipinos from poverty, and we are looking at our lawmakers’ goodwill to help us make this happen,” said Robredo.
The OVP has reached more than 155,000 Filipino families in 176 poor communities nationwide under Angat Buhay.
This is Robredo’s flagship anti-poverty program that links poor communities, with organizations, corporations, and individuals who want to help them.
Angat Buhay, which was launched in October 2016, focuses on six key advocacy areas, namely: public education, rural development, food security and nutrition, women empowerment, universal healthcare, and housing.
