Known to be one of the most innovative international technology brands, Huawei has been serious in delivering the best out of smartphone photography by introducing the latest trends and advancements to its models’ cameras. As testimony to its unwavering commitment to consumers, it has partnered with premium German camera manufacturer Leica – bringing new light to smartphone photography.
Through the said partnership, Huawei is the first to introduce a smartphone with a dual rear camera setup through the Huawei P9. While other smartphone brands followed suit, the Chinese smartphone giant once again raised the bar by introducing a flagship device with three main cameras on it, the Huawei P20 Pro.
Such innovation in smartphone photography has added to the advent of a modern form of art expression. Recognizing this, Huawei has started the “Next-Image Awards,” intended for all Huawei users to see the world in different angles using a smartphone camera.
First introduced in September 2017, the Huawei Next-Image Awards is a global competition for Huawei users, encouraging them to unleash their artistic side through photography and videography. The said competition also aims to create an interactive community to practice the power of visual media and visual language. The Philippines is one of the countries with the most number of entries with 10,431 submissions from 3,378 participants.
Playing as different institutions but with the same value for recognizing the product of the collision of art and technology as well as Filipino talent, Huawei Philippines collaborated with Manila Bulletin to recognize the top 30 finalists of the local leg of the Next-Image Awards.
With this, Huawei also became the first brand to praise its customers’ work through a photo exhibit and have it published in a national broadsheet like Manila Bulletin.
The Next-Image photo exhibit showcased the entries of the top finalists for the local leg of the Next-Image Awards. Hosted in the history-rich The Manila Hotel, the Next-Image photo exhibit highlighted the imaging prowess of the Huawei smartphones used by the top finalists including Huawei P20 Pro, Huawei P10, Huawei P9, Huawei P9 Plus, Huawei Mate 10, Huawei Mate 10 Pro, Huawei Nova 2i, Huawei Nova 2 Lite, and Huawei Y7 Prime.
The photo exhibit also presented a series of informational talks from Huawei Regional Marketing Manager Emma Cai, Manila Bulletin Tech News Editor Art Samaniego, Manila Bulletin Picture Perfect Editor Ronald Jayme, resource person of the Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation Chris Malinao, and Next-Image participant Ace Benalita.
Hailed as the top three finalists were Philip Am Guay, Kyle Cezanne Francisco, and Jamir Lyndon Lumbao. Using a Huawei Mate 10 Pro and a Huawei P9, Guay submitted two separate entries for categories of “Check-In” and “Faces.” A Huawei Mate 10 Pro user as well, Francisco clinched one of the top spots with her entry for the category “Hello, Life.” Lumbao, on the other hand, depicted a snippet of the urban life of Filipinos with his two entries for the “Hello, Life” category which he took using a Huawei Mate 10.
Guay, Francisco, and Lumbao will represent the Philippines in the final global round of the competition wherein winners will be announced on September 24. Snapshots captured through a Huawei lens by the winners of the final round will be showcased in a grand photo exhibit to be held in Paris, France on November 8-11.
