The 72-year-old Fajardo passed away Monday night at the Asian Hospital and Medical Center in Muntinlupa City. He died from complications of a triple heart bypass surgery.
“Danny dreamed that a local daily newspaper would rise in a time that only weekly newspapers existed,” recalled veteran journalist Herbert Vego, who worked with Fajardo over the years.
Fajardo founded Panay News in 1981. He led Panay News to become the biggest daily newspaper in Western Visayas region and is one of the regional news organizations that is visible in Malacañang, the Senate and the Lower House.
Ilonggo journalists for the past 30 years credited Fajardo, who is also known by his initials of “DF”, for launching their careers.
“As a journalist, he was relentless and dauntless,” said Lemuel T. Fernandez, publisher of The Daily Guardian newspaper and was previously an editor of Panay News.
“There is no doubt that Dan’s love for the Iloilo media, its practitioners and the IPC as an institution is deep and sincere,” added Limuel S. Celebria.
Fajardo was prominent figure among media groups having served as president of the Iloilo Press Club (IPC) and executive vice president of the Publishers Association of the Philippines Inc. (PAPI).
Fajardo was also once a commissioner of the Commission on the Filipino Language (CFL) and chief executive officer of the National Book Development Board (NBDB).
