Led by Governor Emmylou Taliño-Mendoza and Vice Governor Shirlyn Macasarte-Villanueva, the celebration showcased cultural tourism-inspired festivities, as well as the peaceful coexistence of Christian, Muslim and lumad constituents under the celebration’s theme - “Cotabato: Tahanan ng Nagkakaisang Sambayan.”
The Talino-Mendoza administration, which began in 2010 and ends in June 2019, named the annual anniversary fete as “Kalivungan Festival,” the official provincial feast that has achieved feats in tourism-boosting tilts, especially in the country’s Aliwan Festivals.
It has also reckoned the provincial anniversary celebration to the creation 104 years ago of the then Empire Cotabato province, which the Marcos government divided into South Cotabato and North Cotabato.
The Marcos regime further divided North Cotabato in 1973 into three provinces – Maguindanao, North Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat. The Sangguniang
Panlalawigan subsequently renamed North Cotabato as Cotabato in keeping with the historic empire province.
This year’s provincial anniversary celebration came with the usual array of cultural presentations, sports activities and peace-building forums.
The sports activities were highlighted by the conduct of the Mindanao Carlos Palanca Jr. Taekwondo Championship Tournament that was graced by Philippine Taekwondo Association president and Makati City Rep. Monsour del Rosario. (Ali Macabalang)
