The 19-year-old Australian Eliza Scanlen is cast in the eight-episode series “Sharp Objects” which is based on the debut novel of the same name by writer Gillian Flynn.
Eliza Scanlen as Amma Crellin
In an exclusive interview with Bulletin Entertainment, the young actress recalled her experiences working on the show with established across Amy Adams, Patricia Clarkson, Chris Messina, and Elizabeth Perkins, among others.
"They taught me by me simply watching them,” she related. “Especially with work ethics, I think that's really important. It was a blessing to learn that from people who are so experienced and great with what they do.”
The story of the series is about reporter Camille Preaker who returns to her small hometown to cover the murder of one preteen girl and the abduction of another. Trying to put together a psychological puzzle from her past, she finds herself identifying with the young victims a bit too closely.
The show was filmed in Los Angeles and Northern California, and in and around Atlanta.
What is her personal takeaway from her role?
“It taught me a lot. Amma is a very complex character especially for her age and it’s not often that we see a character that young yet so complex,” she said.
“Through her, I did a lot of things that I don’t usually do in my life. In the film, she’s very rebellious and in real life I’m not. In acting, you get to play a character so far from who you are as a person.”
In preparing for her role, she researched for factual and biographical information. And during shooting, if there was a scene she was confused with, she wrote down her thoughts until she could come up with a solution about how she would want to approach it.
“That really became a helpful process for me,” she said.
Asked how audiences could relate to her, she pointed out that the character “represents a time we’ve all experienced in our lives.”

“At some point she is a young girl who’s beginning to take interest in adult life and adulthood but at the same time she’s too intense, too hurried to go on the road to adulthood, to be more independent,” Eliza said.
“Sharp Objects” is on HBO GO and HBO (StarHub TV Ch 601) every Monday.
