(Erma Edera) Man, 62, arrested for illegal possession of firearms, usurpation of authority A 62-year-old man was arrested by the Quezon City police for illegal possession of firearms and usurpation of authority after claiming to be an official of a nonexistent anti-smuggling task force under the Office of the President. Investigators of the Quezon City Police District identified the suspect as Perfecto Pornebo Jr., a resident of San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan. Initial investigation showed that Pornebo, who used the name "Jibreel Zeyd Pornebo," introduced himself as the undersecretary of the Presidential Anti-Smuggling Task Force Group Sea Eagle to some members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines. The suspect claimed to be working under the Office of the President and was able to occupy his supposed office space at Room 5, EP Quarters of the Joint Task Force-NCR at the AFP Headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo in May. However, on July 25, members of the JTF-NCR investigated the existence of the said anti-smuggling task force where Pornebo was allegedly working. Upon verification, they found out that the Presidential Anti-Smuggling Task Force Group Sea Eagle does not exist at all, and Pornebo was not connected in any offices under the Office of the President. With the certification from Malacañang that Pornebo was not their employee, Captains Roger Abitria Jr., and Marvin Ybañez of the Counter Intelligence unit of the Philippine Air Force with members of the Quezon City police went to the office of the suspect and asked him to verify his legitimacy as an official. During the questioning, Pornebo insisted he was the undersecretary of the anti-smuggling task force. Irked Pornebo then suddenly pulled out his firearm which was quickly grabbed away by Abitria prompting officers to put him under protective custody. Authorities were able to confiscate from Pornebo's office a loaded Unit National Match Colt 45 and an Armscor caliber .54. When asked for documents of the firearms, Pornebo failed to show any which resulted in his arrest. Pornebo is now under police custody and currently detained at the QCPD-Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit while further investigation is underway. (Dhel Nazario) Self-confessed drug peddler nabbed with 38 sachets of shabu, two guns, submachine gun A self-confessed drug peddler, who surrendered to authorities in 2016, was nabbed with 38 sachets of shabu, two guns, and a submachine gun inside his house in Pasig City on Friday night. Senior Supt. Bernabe Balba, Eastern Police District (EPD) director, identified the suspect as Efren Sulit, classified as a high-value target. He turned himself in before and promised cops that he will change. Armed with a search warrant issued by Pasig Regional Trial Court Executive Judge Danilo Cruz, policemen went to the house of Sulit at 264 M. Suarez Ave. in Barangay Palatiw, Pasig City around 6 p.m. Supt. Hendrix Mangaldan, head of District Special Operations Unit (DSOU) and his team searched the house of the suspect and found the firearms, illegal drugs, and various drug paraphernalia. Police itemized what they seized as two caliber .38 revolvers, one UZI submachine gun, 1 mag. for UZI, 38 plastic sachets containing around 10 grams of shabu with P25 street value, and drug paraphernalia. Balba said they continue to monitor drug personalities who surrendered to them, saying they are not yet off the hook. “We continue to monitor the drug personalities who surrendered in past. The strategy of drug suspects is that they surrender, thinking that they have already cleared themselves of their involvement in the drug trade,” he said. Some of them, like Sulit, spent months of hiatus before getting back in illegal activities,” Balba added. Balba said they conducted test buys to confirm if the suspect returned to his old illegal ways. Sulit is now held at the Pasig City police headquarters’ detention cell. (Jel Santos)
