By Ria Fernandez The state witness on the killing of UST law student Horacio “Atio” Castillo III broke down to tears when he testified against his brothers from the Aegis Juris fraternity on Tuesday morning. Aegis Juris fratman Mark Ventura signs to become witness over death of his neophyte, hazing victim Horatio Castillo III. (Jel Santos / MANILA BULLETIN) Aegis Juris fratman Mark Ventura signs a document to become witness over death of his neophyte, hazing victim Horatio Castillo III.
(MANILA BULLETIN) According to Mrs. Carmina Castillo, mother of Atio, Mark Ventura took the witness stand and was told to identify his “brods”, who were involved in the initiation rites that led to the death of his son, before Manila Regional Trial Court branch 20. “He went down. Humarap siya (he faced) each of his “brods”. Tinuro niya. In-identify niya (he pointed and identified them),” said Mrs. Castillo, narrating to Manila Bulletin what happened during the trial, where media was barred from covering. “Ang sabi niya, mahirap para sa kaniya na gawin ‘yun… kailangang gawin ang tama (He said it was difficult for him to do that. But he had to do what is right),” she added. Meanwhile, Mrs. Carmina said there were no objections from the fratmen when they were being identified. But she could sense that it was also hard for them to be pointed at. “Hindi ko ma-describe. Siguro it was also hard for them na siyempre may tumuturo sa kanila, na you’re part of it. (I can’t describe. Probably it was also hard for them that they were being identified as part of it).” Present at the hearing were the 10 members of the Aegis Juris Fraternity, namely: Arvin Balag, Mhin Wei Chan, Axel Munro Hipe, Oliver John Audrey Onofre, Joshua Joriel Macabali, Ralph Trangia, Robin Ramos, Jose Miguel Salamat, Danielle Hans Matthew Rodrigo, and Marcelino Bagtang. All of them are currently detained at the Manila City Jail for violating the anti-hazing law. Presiding Judge Marivic Balisi-Umali suspended the proceedings “to give consideration” to Ventura’s “well-being.” The next hearing, which is scheduled for the defense’s cross-examination on Ventura and prosecution’s presentation of evidence, will be on September 4 at 8:30 a.m. “Happy naman kami (We are happy) with what transpired. Although mahirap nga kay Mark yung ginawa niya (it was not easy for Mark to do what he did). He was able to get it off his chest,” Mrs. Castillo said. UST student expelled Meanwhile, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) has ordered the expulsion of one of its students after a new complaint of physical abuse surfaced. According to The Varsitarian, College of Science student Kyle Viray, who was tagged in the viral beating confession, has been expelled from the university after a new complaint of physical abuse was filed by his fellow Thomasian. He is barred from taking any course or post graduate studies in UST and the University will not issue a Certificate of Good Moral character to him. Viray was first found guilty of violating the university's Student Code of Conduct and Discipline after his ex-girlfriend complained of multiple physical abuse. (With a report from Erma R. Edera)
