By Betheena Kae Unite Various goods including chicken legs and other goods like ukay-ukay and shoes which are either abandoned or have no import permit were destroyed Tuesday at the Port of Manila. Five containers of more or less 7,200 cases of frozen chicken legs were destroyed due to lack of import permit while other goods were subjected to condemnation after they were abandoned at the ports. (Ali Vicoy/ MANILA BULLETIN) All destroyed goods are valued at P7.75 million. According to the Customs bureau, the frozen chicken leg quarter came from USA in December 2014. The shipments has violated Section 2530(f) of the then Tariff and Customs Code of the Philippines in relation to Bureau of Animal Industry rules and regulation. The bureau explained that the chicken legs were only destroyed almost four years later as the previous contractor that was supposed to dispose the goods backed out. It was disclosed that “during the hearing at the Port of Manila, the consignee, Mofels Food Int’l. Corporation has waived their right to claim the shipment because of accumulated storage and demurrage charges.” The chicken legs will later be dumped in a condemnation facility in Silang, Cavite. Further, several unclaimed cargoes containing used clothing, footwear, shoes, food flavoring, personal effects, and magazine were also destroyed. Customs Chief Isidro Lapena has earlier ordered the condemnation of all overstaying and forfeited goods at all ports in the country. He disclosed that the bureau is set to conduct more condemnation of forfeited fake goods this month.
