“The JBC will hold its final deliberations on Aug. 31,” JBC ex-officio vice chairman and Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said today (August 3).
Then the JBC, which is tasked under the Constitution to screen applicants for the judiciary, will come out with its shortlist of candidates and submit it to President Rodrigo Duterte for selection.
Guevarra explained the JBC will conduct the deliberation after conducting a public interview of the candidates this August 16.
There are five candidates vying for the vacant post, namely, Supreme Court (SC) Justices Teresita Leonardo de Castro, Diosdado Peralta, Lucas Bersamin and Andres Reyes Jr., and Regional Trial Court (RTC) Executive Judge Virginia Tejano Ang of Tagum City, Davao del Norte.
On Tuesday, 10 Supreme Court (SC) justices endorsed to the JBC the nomination of Bersamin as the next Chief Justice.
Acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio confirmed the voting done by the SC as a full court and its endorsement.
During its voting, de Castro and Peralta received nine votes each, while, Reyes only got two votes.
None of the SC magistrates voted for Ang.
The Chief Justice post became vacant following the ouster of Maria Lourdes Sereno.
On May 11, the SC voted 8-6 to grant the quo warranto petition which sought to void Sereno’s 2012 appointment as Chief Justice for having failed to submit her Statements of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) which was one of the requirements set by the JBC.
