Boracay's crime rate drops -- PNP

By Tara Yap Boracay Island— Despite predictions that crimes may swell due to the tourism closure, the Philippine National Police (PNP) recorded a drop of crime incidents in world-famous Boracay Island. (Tara Yap/Manila Bulletin) Senior Superintendent Jesus Cambay, chief the PNP’s Metro Boracay Task Force, said that less and less crime incidents are recorded since April 26, when the resort island off Malay town in Aklan province was closed off from tourists. Speaking at Friday’s inter-agency meeting for updates on the government’s massive rehabilitation program, Cambay said there is only three crimes recorded from June 26 until July 25. The criminal incidents in Boracay recorded for the past month a drop as compared to the previous time period. From April 26 to May 25, there were 11 criminal incidents. From May 26 to June 25, there were only four criminal incidents. Based on data, crimes include physical injuries, reckless imprudence leading to physical injuries and qualified theft. Cambay explained that majority of the crimes in the resort island are caused by drunkenness, which then leads to incidents of physical injury. He noted that many of these are perpetrated by rehabilitation workers, who drink after work and then get into a fight. Cambay noted that the presence of 538 police personnel did curb the number of crimes in the resort island. Cops are also utilized to help in traffic rerouting schemes as demolition works of illegal structures are underway along Boracay’s access roads.
