Advocacy group pushes approval of health care bill

(CAMILLE ANTE / MANILA BULLETIN) "We call on Congress to obey the marching orders of the President and ensure that the UHC Bill is passed into law ASAP," said New Vois Association of the Philippines President Emer Rojas. Rojas said that they were glad that Duterte made an appeal in front of lawmakers for the speedy passage of the long-sought measure. "We thank President Duterte for making the UHC Bill a priority measure in order to reach out to less fortunate members of society and uphold their right to health," said Rojas. "What is even more impressive is that he showed his political will by using the best possible venue- the SONA- in telling lawmakers what he seeks to attain," he added. In his third State of the Nation Address, the President said that he is urging the speedy passage of the UHC Bill, which was authored by former representative turned Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque. "Strong political determination, not political ambition, is the guiding light," said Duterte. The House of Representatives has passed its version (House Bill No. 5784) in September last year, while its counterpart measure in the Senate is still pending at its committee on health. Meanwhile, the members of Federation of the Senior Citizens Association of the Philippines (FSCAP), said that they are also looking forward to the bill's passage as it will bring more benefits for the elderly. "Senior citizens have contributed greatly to society during their prime years and is just fitting that the government takes care of them during their twilight years through the UHC," said Jorge Banal, president of FSCAP- National Capital Region chapter.
