Panaligan By the time her concert at the Mall of Asia (MOA) Arena sounded off the last note on the second night, July 20, international singing superstar Celine Dion was clearly moved by the love Pinoy fans have for her. Celine Dion After performing with gusto and skill more than a dozen of her biggest hits over three decades, capping it with the epic "My Heart Will Go On" from "Titanic," which, for so many years was the highest grossing movie worldwide, people were on their feet. They were chanting her name and begging for just one more number---anything from her vast vault of discography---or heavens knows what they could've done. And who can blame them? Her Pinoy fans had waited for her to come for so long, keeping their faith despite the cancellation of what would've been her first engagement here many years ago. These are people who literally grew up on her music, hearing them in singing contests, on radio, on the phone, from neighbors and friends-turned-enemies-then-friends-again; at the mall, the elevator, in weddings and, perhaps, even in funerals. That is why, through the EDM trend and whatnot, Celine has remained close to their hearts the way family does. Like the Holy Ghost or your shadow, she was there when you did it, whatever that was. Even the singer, herself, realized that moment that the people wont let her go---that it was impossible to go in the face of such pure and unabashed adulation. Seemingly nearly in tears many times throughout her speech acknowledging the love being showered upon her, she confessed "that was all" they had prepared for that night. But the crowd kept roaring. Celine talked about distance, about the logistics of putting up a show half a world away. We thought she sounded apologetic that her concert in Manila only pushed through then. In the end, though, no sorry was necessary. Celine said the bond she has with Filipinos is not just over music, but the capacity to "love." And with that, she closed her eyes, quickly searched her heart, and did impromptu and a capella some lines from the song "Can't Help Falling In Love." It was her response, her salute to loyal disciples. Then she said, "Stay safe, Manila." Then she turned away, then the lights went on. By then, the standing ovation had clocked in at past eight minutes. Then again, it was just one of so many magical moments. Celine, still able to hit the high notes and dance, delivered an almost all-hit repertoire culled from her best-selling albums. Yet we still missed "Immortality," "Where Does My Heart Beat Now," "I Love You, Goodbye," "Taking Chances," "Tell Him," "I Love You," "The Prayer," "Alone," "I Drove All Night," and so much more. Maybe next time? Given how she had professed to have fallen in love with Pinoys, another Celine concert in the future isn't a farfetched idea at all. To quote a line from her song, we believe because "Love Can Move Mountains."
