Celebrity doc posts P360K bail for rape charges

By Jel Santos Celebrity doctor Joel Mendez, who was arrested for two counts of rape and attempted rape, regained his liberty after posting P360, 000 bail on Friday afternoon in Mandaluyong City.

Senior Supt. Moises Villaceran Jr., Mandaluyong police chief, said Mendez posted bail at least 15 hours after he was apprehended inside his condominium unit Thursday night. "His lawyer was very quick to process the bail. Dr. Mendez did not resist arrest, and calmly went to our police station," he said. “Mendez was ordered by the court to pay P120, 000 for each of the cases he was facing.” He said the celebrity doctor was released at 3:10 p.m. Friday. The victim was a young female model who was allegedly a client of the famous doctor, he said. Reports said that Mendez was arrested inside his condominium unit located at St. Francis Building Julia Vargas corner Ortigas 1550, Bank Dr, Ortigas Center, Mandaluyong City around 11:30 p.m. Thursday. Mendez is facing an arrest warrant issued by Hon. Imelda Portes-Saluog of Mandaluyong Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 214 for attempted rape under Criminal case # MC16-4800-FC and two counts of rape under criminal case MC-16-4801FC and MC-16-4802FC. Villaceran said that the warrant was first issued in 2016, yet, the suspect was reportedly not found in his address. The police chief said he was also puzzled why it took very long for the warrant to be served, stressing that he was not the police chief during the time it was issued. Villaceran said the family of the victim recently went to them, asking them to serve the warrant. The celebrity doctor has a standing arrest warrant for his alleged failure to remit his 40 Weighless Service Center employees’ Social Security System contributions. As such, Mendez was convicted by the Court of Tax Appeals (CTA) for tax evasion and sentenced to an indeterminate prison term of one to three years and a fine of P10,000 in 2016.
