Korean actor Jang Geun-suk of the dramas “You’re Beautiful” and “Love Rain” has been revealed to be suffering from bipolar disorder that resulted in his doing alternative military service.
His mental health condition was disclosed by his agency as the actor is about to enlist in the Korean military on July 16.
The 30-year-old star (31 in Korean age) will be fulfilling his mandatory duty as a public service worker instead of being an active duty soldier due to bipolar disorder.

“Bipolar disorder, formerly called manic depression, is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression),” according to the Mayo Clinic website.
Jang Geun-suk was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2011 and underwent all health exams required by Military Manpower Administration, which supervises South Korea’s military service.
His agency, Tree J, said the actor health status “is private information and we feel cautious to discuss his condition. But he has grown as an actor based on fans' support and love. We feel responsible to disclose the information clearly,” reported Yonhap News.
"The actor tried his best to overcome the disorder. But we regret to tell you that he failed to get a satisfactory result,” it said.
On his website, Jang Geun-suk wrote a letter to fans regarding his military enlistment.
“I want to use the two years time to be given to me as a meaningful time in my life. I debuted when I was young and I have never taken a rest for 27 years and never spent time entirely for myself,” he said.
