Authorities have finished conducting an autopsy on the body of slain Tanauan, Batangas Mayor Antonio Halili as police push for the quick resolution of the case, a highly reliable source said Tuesday.

The source said the autopsy report will likely determine the exact cause of death of the 72-year-old mayor, including on what part of his body did the bullet hit, how far the gunman was when he pulled the trigger, and possibly, the length of the firearm used. It could lead investigators to other clues that would help solve the case.
Earlier, Chief Supt. Edward Carranza, regional director of Calabarzon Police Regional Office (PRO-4A), said the gunman must have used a rifle but they will have to determine what type was really used.
At the same time, the source said ballistics examination on the recovered empty shells in the area was also finished.
The ballistics report will determine the type of bullet and the firearm used by the gunman. A cross-match examination will then have to be conducted to determine who owns the gun and possibly, the identity of the gun’s owner.
Carranza earlier said no bullet casing from the gunman was recovered but other reports claimed otherwise.
Several bullet casings were recovered at the parking lot of the city hall where about 75 close-in security aides of Halili returned fire when the mayor was shot.
As of this writing, the source requested not to divulge further details on the results of the autopsy and ballistic examinations.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Calabarzon Police Regional Office (PRO-4A) were expected to give further updates on the case of the slain mayor within the day.
CHR probe
Meanwhile, the Commission on Human Rights in the region (CHR-Calabarzon) has requested for a copy of the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of the incident as they initiated their own investigation.
Lawyer Rex Guevarra, officer-in-charge of the CHR-Calabarzon, said Tuesday that they initiated an investigation since Halili's slay is an apparent case of "arbitrary deprivation of right to life."
"We want to find out the truth, we want to find facts so that we can also help also other government agency in their investigations," Guevarra said in a phone interview.
Guevarra bared that they are also planning to get statements from the family of Halili to determine whether they are receiving death threats prior to the killing. He said they will visit the wake of Halili at their house in Barangay Sambat, Josefa Village, Tanauan, Batangas.
Guevarra said a letter of request was already sent to the office of the city hall.
