Capt. Al Anthony B. Pueblas, Civil Military Operation (CMO) officer of the Army’s 402nd Infantry (Stingers) Brigade on Saturday identified the victim as Melecio C. Monta, 48, a resident of Purok 1, Barangay Cambuayon, Bacuag, Surigao del Norte.
The victim was shot to death by 3 armed men believed to be members of Guerilla Front Committee 16-C (GFC 16-C) of the CPP-NPA North Eastern Mindanao Region Committee (NEMRC) operating in the area, Capt. Pueblas told the Manila Bulletin on Saturday.
Mrs. Cecilia Monta, the victim's wife, also told field Army unit that they were resting with their 8 children when armed CNTs barged into their house at 8:15 pm on Wednesday and forcefully took Melecio outside. Suddenly gunshots were heard then she saw her husband killed by the CNTs, Capt. Pueblas said.
It can be recalled that on April 18, 2018, same CNT group harassed the peaceful community of Barangay Lahi, Gigaquit town which resulted in the death of a villager and the wounding of two other villagers, the CMO officer added.
Lt. Col. Xerxes A. Trinidad, commanding officer of the Army’s 36th Infantry (Valor) Battallion condemned the “dastardly and inhuman act” of the CNTs.
“The army offers its condolences to the bereaved family and prayer for the repose of the soul of Mr. Monta on his sudden demise brought by these NPAs who have no regard for human life and cemented their character as terrorist organization, Trinidad said.
“This is a desperate situation for the NPAs as they practice terror and fear to force the people to support them. This is a clear indication that they do not have the support of the people or else they will not recourse to this insensible killing even to former members of the AFP who have lived a simple civilian life.” said Brig. Gen. Franco Nemesio M. Gacal, commanding general of the 402nd “Stingers” Brigade.
