President Duterte has appointed Commission on Elections (Comelec)-Davao assistant regional election director Marlon Casquejo as the poll body's new commissioner.
(MANILA BULLETIN)
Duterte signed Casquejo's appointment papers on June 18. He will be replacing Christian Robert Lim who retired in February this year.
Based on his appointment paper, Casquejo will serve as Comelec Commissioner for seven years until February 2, 2025.
Before Casquejo, Duterte has named Socorro Inting as Comelec Commissioner last April. Inting's appointment was approved by the Commission on Appointments (CA) last month.
Inting was an associate justice of the Court of Appeals before being appointed by Duterte to the Comelec.
With Casquejo's appointment, Duterte has one more Comelec commissioner to name to replace Arthur Lim who also retired in February this year.
The CA also confirmed last month Duterte's appointment of Sheriff Abas in November last year. Abas replaced Andres Bautista who resigned last October 2017 due to the corruption allegations raised by his estranged wife.
Abas worked as acting assistant regional director of the Civil Service Commission (CSC) in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao from June 2007 until his appointment to the Comelec on April 2015.
He headed the poll body's packing and shipping committee, finished his undergraduate degree in philosophy at Notre Dame University in Cotabato City in 1999. He obtained his law degree from the Ateneo de Davao University in 2004.
Other new appointees
Meanwhile, in official documents Malacañang released Wednesday, Duterte also named new associate justices as the Court of Appeals and the Sandiganbayan.
On January 18, Duterte signed the appointment paper of Georgina Hidalgo as associate justice at the Saniganbayan. She will be replacing Rodolgo Ponferrada.
Hidalgo was Caloocan Regional Trial Court (RTC) judge who signed the arrest orders against the police involved in the killing of Carl Arnaiz and Reynaldo de Guzman in Caloocan last year.
In one of the hearings, Hidalgo of the Caloocan RTC Branch 122 did not hide her displeasure over a mix-up that led to the filing of the said case in the wrong venue. A witness said that Arnaiz was killed in Navotas and not in Caloocan City.
On April 30, 2018, Duterte named Emily Aliño-Geluz as associate justice at the Court of Appeals. She will be replacing Leoncia Dimagiba.
Geluz, on the other hand, was one of the seven who were up to replace Dimagiba. One of the other contenders was Davao del Norte Judge Dorothy Montejo Gonzaga who ordered the arrest of self-confessed hitman Edgar Matobato.
