Boy drowns off Batanes amid bad weather

By Betheena Kae Unite A senior high school student drowned in the waters off Mahatao, Batanes amid heavy rains brought by tropical storm Domeng, the Philippine Coast Guard said in a belated report. (PIXABAY/MANILA BULLETIN) (PIXABAY/MANILA BULLETIN) The body of the 16-year-old boy was pulled from the waters an hour after he drowned off Barangay Disbayangan in Mahatao, Batanes Monday, Coast Guard authorities said. Investigation showed that the victim was swimming on the area with his 16-year-old cousin and his 51-year-old uncle, Douglas Estamo, of Biga, Cavite when the incident occurred. The family told authorities that while swimming, they were battered by big waves dragging them into the deeper portion of the sea which cause him to drown. Coast Guard said the victim’s father tried to rescue the boy but to no avail. A search and rescue team from the Coast Guard Station Batanes responded to the area to fish the body out from the sea. It was disclosed that the victim was from Olongapo, Zambales. His family went to Batanes to celebrate their grandmother’s death anniversary.
