Police said that the 31-year-old suspect had been working as a jeepney barker in Quezon City since he went there last March 10 from General Santos City.
Avenido was tagged in the stabbing and killing of Assistant Special Prosecutor of the Office of the Ombudsman, Atty. Madonna Joy Ednaco-Tanyag, Monday morning.
Investigators of QCPD said that Tanyag was heading back to her car parked along Visayas Avenue in Barangay Vasra, Quezon City around 11:20 a.m. after buying a pack of milk tea in the area.
She had attended a hearing in Sandiganbayan earlier that day, police said.
While the woman was seated in the driver's seat of the car, a man holding a knife stabbed her in her chest before running away from the scene.
Barangay authorities rushed Tanyag to East Avenue Medical Center where she succumbed to three critical stab wounds on her left chest.
After the incident, the QCPD formed a special task group to fast track the probe on the prosecutor's case which led to the arrest of the suspect.
One of the witnesses told the police that Avenido had confided to him of his involvement in the stabbing incident.
Clips of closed circuit television (CCTV) near the crime scene also showed the suspect escaping wearing a black shirt, blue jersey shorts, and a ball cap.
The tattoos on both arms of the suspect were also seen in the CCTV which matched the descriptions of witnesses.
Joint operatives of QCPD-Masambong Police Station (PS-2) and Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit conducted a follow-up operation against Avenido around 5:45 p.m., at Palayan Dulo, in Barangay Culiat, Quezon City.
Recovered from the suspect were two identification cards of the victim, two coin purses, P9,000 cash, and a mobile phone.
The suspect will be charged with robbery with homicide.
