SURIGAO CITY – Twenty-six local and foreign teams show action in the most thrilling big sea sporting event- the three-day 1st Surigao International Dragon Boat Summer Festival that kicked off in this northeastern-tip city of Surigao, in Southern Philippines.

Surigao City, Philippines. (Mike U. Crismundo/MANILA BULLETIN) Top local government unit officials led by Surigao City Mayor Ernesto T. Matugas spearheaded the grand opening ceremony at the City Boulevard here. A huge crowd, both foreign and domestic, mushroomed along the side of Surigao City Boulevard here and witnessed the first ever hosted international dragon boat race in the Philippines with prize money close to half a million pesos to winners and island tour package for the participating crews. There are four international teams and 22 teams from the Philippines, with a total of 551 crew men who are seeing action in the race. “I am sure that our city will secure a mark in the world map of tourism because of this big international event and our local folks are also benefited by this economically,” stressed Mayor Matugas in an interview with The Manila Bulletin at the sideline of the grand opening here. “All systems go and all our designated different committees are already mobilized for the success of this first ever international dragon boat competition here,” Ms. Roselyn B. Merlin told the Manila Bulletin. The competition will run up to May 27, 2018. The participating crews from Canada, Guangzhou, Penang, Malaysia, Hong Kong and China and crews from the different parts of the country will execute their synchronized paddling skills through a 200-meter race course along the Surigao City Boulevard here. In the standard open category, at least 22 paddlers with a team coach and a team manager will represent each team while in the small boat-mixed category teams will have only 16 members also composed of one drummer, one helm, 10 paddlers, two reserve paddlers, a team coach, and a team manager. The local government, the Department of Tourism (DOT) and business sectors providing cash prizes, accommodations and other incentives to participants as part of the campaign to attract more visitors to the city. More than P3 million is the over-all budget for the success of this competition. DOT 13 Regional Director Ma. Ana T. Nuguid is expecting sea sporting enthusiasts, including tourists both foreign and domestic, during the three days exciting and prestigious event for the year in Southern Philippines. Communication Secretary Martin Andanar was the guest of honor and speaker during the grand opening on Friday here. He was accompanied by Philippine Information Agency Director-General Undersecretary Harold E. Clavite and PIA 13 Regional Director Abner M. Caga. For security purposes, all drones will be allowed to take aerial video only after an inspection by members of Surigao City Police Station.
