By Philippine News Agency A total of 37 student-inmates of the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (UPHSD)-Bilibid Extension School received their respective diplomas on Thursday during the 29th commencement rites inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City. New Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Roland 'Bato' Dela Rosa graced the occasion as guest of honor and speaker as the 37 inmates graduated from various courses. Among those present were the extension school’s faculty and the inmates’ relatives and other student inmates. Of the 37 graduates, 18 have completed their full Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship degree while 19 others finished their Computer Hardware Servicing course inside the national penitentiary facilities. The inmate degree holders also completed their required extension school's internship program while under detention through Chief Supt. Dr. Rexy Morales, the chief of the Training and Education Department of BuCor; UPHSD president Anthony Tamayo and Dr. Daisy Tamayo, vice chair of the UPHSD Board. More than 500 student inmates have graduated from the extension school since it was established in 1985. Last year, some of the 17 student-inmates who have graduated the extension school program and have completed their prison terms, were already released and are now employed outside the Bilibid compound. Some graduates who requested not to be named expressed joy as the new degree they have obtained from the prison extension school has provided them new hope and a renewed life for a better future. Dr. Antonio Tamayo, chair and founder of the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (UPHSD) said the prison extension school at the Medium Security Compound of Camp Sampaguita is one of University of Perpetual Help’s corporate social responsibility programs together with the Mangyan Mission School in Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro.
