GUIMBA, Nueva Ecija — Monday’s barangay elections could not have been as much of a thriller as in Barangay Caballero, this town, where the new village chieftain got the win via coin toss.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Nueva Ecija said that Caballero posted the lone incident of a deadlock in the tally of votes for barangay chairman out of the 849 barangays in the province.
Salvador Garcia, the incumbent barangay chairman, and Feliciano Castro, Jr., an incumbent kagawad, were tied at 343 votes each at the end of the count.
The local Comelec’s recourse was for the two candidates to break the tie via coin toss, which Castro won two-out-of-three.
Interestingly, Castro was also tied at 7th place for kagawad with another candidate who had the exact same number of votes as he did in the 2010 barangay elections.
Instead of taking the option of a coin toss to break the tie, Castro gave way to the other candidate to be a member of the village council.
But in 2013, then incumbent barangay captain Endong Garcia ran and won as vice mayor of Guimba; and as the rule of succession was followed, Salvador Garcia who was the No. 1 kagawad became barangay chairman of Caballero.
Consequently, Castro was able to retake his seventh spot as kagawad of the barangay.
