(photo sourced from VP Leni Robredo's facebook page) In a short Labor Day message, Robredo paid tribute to Filipino workforce for their efforts and sacrifice for shaping the country’s path. “Ngayong Labor Day, kinikilala natin ang pagod and sakripisyo ng bawat manggagawang Pilipino na siyang nagtataguyod sa ating bayan. (This Labor Day, let us recognize the efforts and sacrifice of every Filipino worker, who is the foundation of the country),” Robredo said in a Facebook post. In the celebration of Labor Day, the Vice President took the occasion to express her gratitude to all Filipino workers. “Maraming salamat sa bawat manggagawang Pilipino (Thank you so much to every Filipino worker),” Robredo, a lawyer and former housing chief said. A slideshow of the photos of Robredo with workers during her community visits flashed one by one in her Facebook post. Her caption for the photos was: “Mabuhay ang manggagawang Pilipino!” (Long live the Filipino worker!) Thousands of workers from various labor groups marked the observance of Labor Day with protest actions in different parts of the country. The workers took the street to protest against contracting schemes being employed by establishments, which President Rodrigo Duterte promised to end by issuing an Executive Order. In Cebu, Duterte signed an EO which states the “prohibition against illegal contracting and subcontracting.” “Contracting and subcontracting were undertaken to circumvent the workers’ right to security of tenure,” he said.
