4 NPAs killed, 5 more captured in CamSur

By Niño Luces and Ruel Saldico Camp Ola, Albay/Camp Angeles, Camarines Sur – Four suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed and five others captured in two separate encounters between government troops and the rebel-terrorist group since Monday in Camarines Sur. Senior Inspector Malu Calubaquib, Police Regional Office 5 (PRO-5) spokesperson, told The Manila Bulletin that the first encounter broke out at 8:50 a.m. Monday morning in Barangay Gubat, Lagonoy town. Sporadic gun battles went on until 1:20 p.m. and at least one guerrilla was confirmed killed. His body was found with his M-14 rifle beside him. Yesterday morning, three members of the NPA’s Larangan 1, Komiteng Probinsiya 5 of Bicol Regional Party Committee (BRPC) were killed in another skirmish with government forces in Barangay Payak, Bato town. Calubaquib said the rebel encounter with Bravo Company of the army’s 83rd Infantry Battalion (83IB) started at 6:45 a.m. while the troopers, led by 1st Lieutenant Hoponia, were patrolling the area. The hour-long encounter ended in the capture of five guerrillas – two of them wounded – and the finding of three bodies and 3 M-16 rifles at the battle site. Maj. Gen. Jesus A. Manangquil Jr., commander of the army’s 9th Infantry “Spear” Division in Bicol, lauded the cooperation of the local residents in giving real-time information that served as key for the successful combat operation of the army. Manangquil said his command will not loosen up as it is their commitment to secure peaceful communities in the province.
