Dr. Jezelyn Balajadia, lady veterinarian of RDF Piggery, inspecting the female pigs being groomed as Sexy Pigs
If there are sexy women, did you know that there are also sexy pigs? Yes, there are. In fact, raising sexy pigs for breeding is the secret of a big piggery in Central Luzon to produce healthy and fast-growing piglets.
The big piggery is the RDF Piggery which is a division of the highly integrated company called RDF Feed, Livestock and Foods, Inc. put up by Dr. Robert Lo, a veterinarian turned entrepreneur.
The piggery is a major player in the integrated firm responsible for producing all the pork requirements of more than 100 Fresh Options meatshops and restaurants mostly in Central Luzon and Metro Manila. In charge of the piggery operations is veterinarian Ariel Peregrino who graduated from the Central Luzon State University. He is really an expert in swine production. He is the advocate of using sexy pigs for breeding.
And what are sexy pigs? They are females that have to be well selected for their right body conformation, given the right nutrition and then closely monitored during their development. They have to develop strong legs and hooves. When they reach the right breeding of eight months, they should weigh 130 kilos, not much lower or higher.
One hundred thirty kilos is the right weight, according to Dr. Peregrino. What happens when the gilt is lower than 130 kilos? Dr. Peregrino says that the mother pig will not have enough energy reserves come farrowing time. The animal could become thin very fast after giving birth and that is not good. It will take a longer time for it to be bred again. Its potential for producing more live piglets could be compromised. And the unsexy pig could be culled much ahead of the usual time.
Usually, the breeding female pig gives birth to an average of 4.5 times before it is culled. But if the sexy pig is well cared for, it could give birth as many as eight times, and that is their goal at the RDF Piggery.
What happens if the breeder gilt weighs more than 130 kilos at eight months old? That would be too fat. And what is bad about that? The animal will eat more feed during gestation and that will add to the cost of production. Besides, Dr. Peregrino says that fat breeders produce less milk for their litters.
Well, now you see that even in swine, there is such a thing as a sexy animal.
