Beauty can be from home

By Kathrina Ysabel Pineda 1 Self-care is one of the most fulfilling gifts you can give yourself, and it does not have to require you to splurge and empty your wallet. You can have your own version of a spa treatment right in the comfort of your own home. How, you ask?  You may not be aware; but there are things in your pantry that have great benefits for your face, hair, and body.  And the best part of it all is – they are natural! You don’t have to leave home, go to a salon or spa. You can have your own luxurious treatments at home with these recipes for beauty: 2

For Face

Honey and Oatmeal Mask — No, these are not for breakfast; these two are great ingredients for a face mask. Oatmeal helps in absorbing impurities while honey helps regenerate the cells on the face and make it smoother. In a bowl, mix the two ingredients together then spread it all over your face (you can include the neck, too, if you want). Let it stay for about 15 minutes then rinse it off.  Now, your face is as soft as a baby’s butt. Egg and Yogurt Face Pack — Egg contains albumin which helps in tightening the face, while yogurt helps in lightening blemishes and pigmentations. Mix these two together and you will have your desired flawless face. Just take an egg together with a teaspoon of yogurt together, massage it on your face and let it all soak in for a good 10 minutes. For best results, rinse with cold water and use twice a week. 3

For Hair

Banana and Egg Hair Treatment — This treatment adds a little more shine to your hair – if that is what you are looking for. With just two ingredients you can achieve silky smooth hair. You’ll need an egg mixed together with a mashed up banana. Apply the mixture to your hair and leave it for about 30 minutes.  Wash it off afterwards with your shampoo, and conditioner, and brush your hair to feel it become much smoother. Apple Cider Vinegar Clarifying Shampoo — Shampooing regularly is not healthy for the hair. You can clarify your hair by using an ingredient to rid of the toxins from the shampoo’s chemicals.  For those who do not know, apple cider vinegar is a holy grail that has many benefits. Mix ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar with a cup of water.  If possible, get an apple cider vinegar that is raw, organic and unpasteurized.  They contain raw enzymes and gut-friendly bacteria that promote healing. Rinse it all after with your usual conditioner. 4

For Body

Olive Oil and Sea Salt Body Scrub — For this gentle body scrub, mix a 2 is to 1 ratio of olive oil to sea salt. Use it as you take a bath before you rinse it all off on a warm shower.  This treatment helps rid of dead skin cells by gentle exfoliation.  This beats getting expensive spa treatments.Optional: you can add essential oils such as lavender oil for added relaxation. Coffee Exfoliating Scrub — This gives us another reason to love coffee -- it makes for a great body scrub. I remembered getting a relaxing body scrub in a spa where they used coffee grounds and thought to myself that I, too, can make that at home. And it will not cost as much! You will need to get two more ingredients for this treatment – coconut oil and brown sugar. Get a bowl and mix 1/2 cup of ground coffee, ¼ cup of brown sugar, and ¼ cup of coconut oil together.  Massage it on your body in a circular motion, then rinse off with lukewarm water.  Continue on to your usual body wash.
