3 killed in fire at Manila Pavilion

The three fatalities were all PAGCOR employees identified as Treasury Officer Jun Evangelista, Marlyn Omadto, assistant treasury officer, and Billy de Castro , security officer, according to PAGCOR assistant vice president for corporate communications Carmelita Valdez.
Johnny Gaw Yu, of the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO), said the three were declared dead on arrival at the Manila Doctor's Hospital after a fire hit the Waterfront Manila Pavilion Hotel along United Nations Avenue.
Doctors managed to revive a female victim, who remains in critical condition, according to Manila Doctors' hospital director Hian Kua.
Fourteen others have been injured, Kua added.
Supt. Jonas Silvano, District Fire Marshal of Manila-Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), said that the fire started at 9:52 a.m. Authorities said that the blaze started at the first floor area wherein there is an ongoing renovation.
At about 11 a.m., the fire status reached Task Force Alpha, but after half an hour, it was declared to Task Force Bravo.
Johnny Yu, head of the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) said that they initially brought 10 casualties to the Manila Doctor's hospital, but the four fatalities were declared dead-on-arrival (DOA) after receiving first aid and medical attention.
"Initially based on the report meron tayong mga trapped victims na nakita... around 19. Sure na may trapped victims na hinahanap ngayon which are the two CCTV operators. (..there are trapped victims seen..around 19. It is certain that there are trapped victims that we are searching for who are the CCTV operators)," Yu said.
He said that over 300 people have already been rescued.
"Kanina pa tayo nagkaroon ng evacuation. We have both ground rescue and air rescue. Kanina may dumating nang helicopter. So far, around 300 people have been rescued. (We have been conducting an evacuation since the onset. Earlier there was a helicopter that arrived...)," he said further.
The fire, which started around 9:48 a.m. has reached Task Force Bravo, as fire officials from different departments jointly try to put it out.
"It's still on Task Force Bravo. 'Yung weather condition lang talaga... yung usok masyadong heavy. Nahihirapan ang mga bumbero namin. " We're still investigating and continous pa din ang firefighting operation. (...It's the weather condition...the smoke is too heavy. Our firemen are having a difficult time.)," he said.
As of the latest report from DZMM Teleradyo, rescue and retrieval operations are still ongoing. They are still searching for some 20 persons believed to be trapped at the 5th floor of the Water Front Manila Pavilion Hotel & Casino located at the corner of UN Avenue and Ma. Orosa Street.
The status of the fire is at Task Force Bravo and is already considered a confined fire, or a blaze that is in no danger of spreading to the vicinity.
Some of those rescued used ladders in going down from the upper floors.
UN Avenue, Kalaw and Ma. Orosa is now rendered impassable due to the firefighting operations. Also, electricity in the area has already been cutoff.
